Update your username as a guardian or student contact

[For Guardians] Learn how to update the username (email address and/or phone number) associated with your brightwheel account.

Student contacts (Parents, Family, and Approved Pickups) can log in using an authenticated username (email and/or phone number), and a password. It is vital to maintain updated login credentials for the security of your account and to be able to communicate with your childcare provider.

ℹ️ Program staff cannot edit usernames or make changes to activated accounts. Once a student contact’s brightwheel account is activated, only the account owner can update the email or phone number.


Update email address

On the app

  1. Tap the ≡ three line menu in the top-left corner of the app

  2. Select Edit Profile

  3. In the Account Info section, update the email address

  4. Tap Save in the top-right corner

On the web

  1. Click your profile tile in the bottom-left corner of the screen

  2. Select Profile

  3. In the Account Info section, click Edit

  4. Enter the new email address

  5. Click Save

Note: If you get an error entering the email address, it’s likely already linked to another account. To fix this, contact brightwheel Support to deactivate the duplicate account, then add the email to the correct account.


Update phone number

Updating your mobile number in the app changes the authenticated phone number used for login and SMS notifications, while updating Phone 1 or Phone 2 field on the web modifies contact numbers on the student profile but does not affect the authenticated mobile number used at login.

  1. Log in on the app

  2. Tap the three horizontal lines (top left) > My Profile

  3. Tap the mobile number field and enter the new number

  4. Enter the verification code received via text to finalize the change


Manage brightwheel password

Student contacts can reset or update a brightwheel account password at any time. Program admins are not able to view or manage student contact's passwords.

Troubleshoot username updates

I'm getting the error "email already taken" when updating my email address.

This error means the email is linked to another account. To resolve this, check if the email is associated with an inactive account. If so, please contact the brightwheel Support Team to deactivated the inactive account to free up the email to use.

I can't update my number.

If you can’t update a phone number, it may already be linked to another account. Please deactivate the other account to free up the number. Once deactivated you can add it to your current account. Please contact the brightwheel Support Team to deactivated the inactive account.


FAQs

Will notifications be sent to my email or phone number?

If both an email address and phone number are added, then brightwheel will always default to the email address when sending important communication such as billing-related emails or password resets.

Notifications for billing-related emails or password resets will always prioritize the email address over the phone number, ensuring critical communication is not missed.

Can I delete my phone number?

Once a phone number has been verified, it can only be changed or updated; it cannot be deleted. If a number needs to be deleted, reach out to the brightwheel team for assistance.
