If staff can’t check in or out, or if you're unable to update a timecard due to an "open timecard" error message, it likely means the staff member has an open or overlapping timecard. This usually happens when someone forgets to check out.
Fix open timecard errors for staff
To resolve the issue, an Administrator will need to locate the open timecard and either add a check-out time or delete it. Once the timecard is updated, the staff member will be able to check in or out again and you'll be able to create new timecards without seeing the error.
Log in on the web and go to Staff > Time tracking
Filter by All Time to see all times, then click the box 'Show only open timecards'
Next to the open timecard, click Actions > Edit and add the check-out time
Click Save when finished
💡 Tip: Avoid this issue in the future by turning on the Auto Check Out setting. This setting automatically checks out any staff still signed in at midnight so they can check in the next day without a problem. It helps prevent last-minute stress during check-in, and you can always go back later to update the timecard.
