When staff check in and out using brightwheel, any overtime hours are automatically calculated based on the overtime rules configured by the program administrator. This streamlines the process of tracking extra hours and ensures accurate records for payroll!

Example of how overtime is calculated
Note: This example calculates overtime based on both weekly and daily thresholds. While daily overtime may not be required by all programs, understanding how it works can be helpful, especially since it is mandated for some employers in California.
Let’s assume a program’s work week begins on Sunday and must by abide by the following state labor requirements:
Overtime must be paid for any hours worked beyond 40 in a week
Daily overtime applies to any hours worked beyond 8 in a single day
Double overtime applies to any hours worked beyond 12 in a single day
To comply with these regulations, the program should customize its payroll settings in brightwheel as follows:
For example, let’s consider a single employee who worked the following schedule last week:
Based on the overtime rules and the employee’s schedule outlined below, here is how brightwheel would calculate overtime for that individual:
The total overtime calculated for this employee is 24 hours, as they worked 65 hours during the week, exceeding the standard 40 hour work week. In addition, 1 hour qualifies as double overtime, since the employee worked 13 hours on Sunday, surpassing the 12 hour daily threshold.
